Brindley Sherratt, bass

Born in Lancashire, bass Brindley Sherratt studied at the Royal Academy of Music, of which he is now a Fellow and Visiting Professor.

Brindley Sherratt’s 2018/19 season includes Fafner in The Ring Cycle and Claggart in a new production of Billy Buddat Covent Garden; Judge Turpin in a new production of Sweeney Toddat the Opernhaus Zurich and Sarastro in a new production of Die Zauberflöte at the Glyndebourne Festival. He also sings Hunding in concert performances of Die Walkürewith the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis and with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Omer Meir Wellber.

Recent highlights have included Sarastro,Sparafucile Rigoletto, Gremin Eugene Onegin, Ramfis Aidaand Timur Turandotat Covent Garden; Ochs Der Rosenkavalierfor the Glyndebourne Festival and the Welsh National Opera; Sarastro at the Wiener Staatsoper, Hamburgische Staatsoper and for the Netherlands Opera; Claggart for the Teatro Réal in Madrid, at the Glyndebourne and Aldeburgh Festivals and at the BBC Proms; Geronte di Revoir Manon Lescautfor the Metropolitan Opera; Bottom A Midsummer Night’s Dreamat the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence; Doctor Wozzeckat the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Arkel Pelléas et Mélisandefor the Opernhaus Zurich, Oper Frankfurt and Glyndebourne Festival.  His many roles for the English National Opera have included Sarastro, Pimen Boris Gudonovand Fiesco Simon Boccanegra. He has also sung Banco Macbethfor the Opéra de Bordeaux; Pimen for the Opéra de Nice; Balducci Benvenuto Celliniand Hobson Peter Grimesin Salzburg; Rocco in Seville; Pogner Die Meistersinger von Nürnbergfor the Welsh National Opera and Fasolt Das Rheingoldand Filippo Don Carlofor Opera North.

In demand on the concert platform he has appeared at the Bregenz, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Salzburg and Three Choirs Festivals and at the BBC Proms. He works regularly with leading orchestras and conductors and recent engagements have included the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House with Pappano; the Philharmonia with Sir Andrew Davis; the Hallé Orchestra with Elder the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Harding; the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with Bicket; the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner; the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with Langrée.

He has recorded the roles of Polyphemus Acis & Galetea(Nimbus); Somnus/Cadmus Semeleand Ariodate Serse(Chandos); Ubaldo in Donizetti’s Imelda de Lambertazziand Goffredo in Bellini’s Il Pirata(Opera Rara); Rocco Fidelio(Glyndebourne Live) as well as Judas in The Apostleswith the Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder; Beethoven’s Missa Solemniswith the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and John Nelson and Haydn Masses and Bach Cantatas with the Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
