Dame Anne Evans first became known as a Mozart singer, but went on to become one of the leading Wagner sopranos of her generation, singing the role of Brunnhilde in the celebrated Ring cycles conducted by Daniel Barenboim at Bayreuth. Using audio and visual recordings from her long career, she and the music critic David Nice discuss the formidable hurdles a singer faces when he or she takes up the challenge of singing Wagner’s most demanding roles.

In a career spanning 36 years Dame Anne Evans’s operatic roles ranged from Monteverdi and J.C. Bach to Wagner and Richard Strauss. She was the Brünnhilde in Der Ring at the Bayreuth Festival with Daniel Barenboim for four consecutive years, and at Berlin ’s Deutsche Opera for five. She also sang the role in many other places, including Covent Garden (with Bernard Haitink), in Vienna, Paris and Buenos Aires , for Welsh National Opera and in concert with the Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnanyi.

Anne was also a celebrated Isolde, a role she sang in Berlin, Dresden, Paris, Brussels, Lisbon and with WNO. Other roles included Leonore in Fidelio at the Edinburgh Festival, in Stuttgart and at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, where she was also Elisabeth in Tannhaüser; Donna Anna and many other Mozart roles; Elsa in Lohengrin; the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier; Ariadne in both the original and revised versions of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos; and Chrysothemis in Elektra. She gave recitals at the Wigmore Hall and the Edinburgh Festival.

Made a Dame of the British Empire in 2000, she now devotes her time to teaching, coaching and encouraging young singers. She is a trustee of the Countess of Munster musical scholarships.
